Who we are
We are David Watts and Joella Kendall, two creative minds with a lifelong love of storytelling, design, and imagination. Between us, we’ve spent years working in the creative world, but we always knew there were stories inside us waiting to be told. Our biggest inspiration? Our son.
The Adventures of Cecil Spider & Monkey Pete began when we were choosing names for our then child on the way, giggling together and dreaming up funny little jungle adventures. Those moments turned into full stories, starting with Manners Make Magic, and we haven’t stopped creating since.
The heart behind the stories
Every Cecil & Pete story is built around kindness, friendship, and curiosity — the small values that make a big difference.
We believe stories can teach children how to care, share, and wonder about the world. Our tales are colourful, imaginative, and full of warmth, stories parents love reading, and children love remembering.
To the drawingboard
The silly conversations flowed easily. We laughed, then said, “Let’s develop the characters and make the book.”
We began drawing cartoon spiders and monkeys. After four or five iterations, we knew we’d found our stars. A studious, explorer-scientist spider emerged alongside a lovable, excitable monkey whose exuberant personality burst into life the moment the pencil finished the twinkle in his eye. From there more characters began to come to life and before we knew it we had a whole jungle crew.
From books to an entire story world
What started as a set of picture books has grown into a full storytelling universe.
We wanted families everywhere to enjoy Cecil & Pete, so we built this website — a digital home for all our adventures.
Here you’ll find beautifully illustrated and lightly animated stories, read-along narration by our very own Courtney Cockatoo, Alana Iguana, and Atilla Gorilla. Whether it’s bedtime, car time, or any time in between, Cecil & Pete will be ready to explore with you.
